February 12, 2006 Who's first? Who's next? Who cares? When a household of sweet old ladies discovers that the handsome bachelor Homicide Detective Dennis O’Finn lives across the street, they are faced with the problem of how to attract his attention. The answer is a genteel murder. When a brash young woman reporter suspects the truth, she becomes the next target. O’Finn is terribly embarrassed when at last he discovers that he himself is the motive for these goings on and manages to solve the case. But the dear old ladies aren't finished... BULL IN A CHINA SHOP was originally published in ELLERY QUEEN'S MYSTERY MAGAZINE, and selected as one of the best mystery stories of the year for inclusion in the anthology BEST DETECTIVE STORIES OF 1957, published by E. P. Dutton and Company. When it was performed as one of the ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS television series, the cast featured Estelle Winwood as Hildegarde, Elizabeth Patterson as Birdie, and Dennis Morgan as O'Finn. Director Beth Martin held auditions on November 19 and 21, and rehearsals started on November 28.
